How An Air Source Heat Pump Reduces Your Energy Bills
Air source heat pumps are a type of renewable energy that works by absorbing the air from the outside environment and converting it to heat in your home. It is fitted outside your property and can be used for central heating, hot water and underfloor heating.
If your home usually relies on oil or liquid petroleum gas for heat and you’re looking to be more environmentally conscious and save money, an air source heat pump is an excellent choice.
So, how exactly does it reduce your energy bills?
Uses electricity instead of gas
Air source heat pumps use electricity rather than oil or liquid petroleum gas. This is much more efficient and can produce up to 4-5 units of heat for every unit of electricity used (gov.uk). This significantly reduces your home’s energy demand, compared to a more traditional gas boiler.
More consistent heat
Air source heat pumps work best operating at a low, consistent temperature rather than putting out bursts of heat like a traditional boiler. It essentially costs less to keep your heat pump running at all times, so turning it off won’t actually save you any money! This is because it’ll have to work harder to get the temperature back up. You can, however, adjust the temperature for different times if you prefer your home cooler at certain times of the day.
As a result of this, your radiators also won’t be as hot as usual which can create a healthier air quality and a safer environment if you have young children or pets!
Tariff savings
Some energy providers will offer a special tariff just for heat pumps, which could reduce your energy bills further. This could save you hundreds of pounds a year, so it’s definitely worth researching when switching to an air source heat pump. As an Octopus Energy approved supplier, we are able to give details of such tariffs on request.
Get a grant with the Boiler Upgrade Scheme
The government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme could help you cover some of the costs of the initial investment when installing an air source heat pump.
Current grants include £7,500 towards an air source heat pump. This is a huge cost saving that will in turn reduce your energy bills going forward.
